Overview
Coull Quartet Roger Coull (violin), Philip Gallaway (violin), Jonathan Barritt (viola), Nicholas Roberts (cello) Coull Quartet play Mozart, Beethoven, Boyce and Puccini The Coull Quartet have been at the forefront of chamber music, both nationally and internationally, for several decades. Indeed, they have performed and broadcast extensively in the UK and abroad over a long and distinguished career to great critical acclaim. This much loved ensemble returns to the Lion Ballroom with the following programme: Boyce (arr. Derek Smith) String Quartet arrangement of Symphony No 1 Mozart String Quartet in G major K387 Puccini Crisantemi Beethoven String Quartet in E minor Op 59 No 2 (‘Razumovsky’) Central to this programme are two major works for the genre: the first of Mozart’s famous set of six quartets dedicated to Haydn, spacious and lyrical and abounding in invention; and the second of Beethoven’s three groundbreaking quartets commissioned by Count Razumovsky, a work of ethereal beauty with an unforgettable skipping Finale. The concert will open with a work of enduring freshness, one of William Boyce’s very short symphonies, skilfully rearranged for string quartet by Derek Smith. Between the Mozart and the Beethoven, the Coull Quartet will play Puccini’s Crisantemi, a most moving elegy. (The chrysanthemum is the traditional Italian flower of mourning.)
