Herefordshire's Highlights in 4 Days

Base yourself in the heart of the county in the tiny cathedral city of Hereford. Check in to the chic Green Dragon Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in the country. On the doorstep, you’ll find the iconic Hereford Cathedral which is home to the Mappa Mundi, the world's largest medieval map, as well as a wonderfully preserved example of a Chained Library.

From here, cross Bishop’s Meadow and take a relaxing stroll along the River Wye. Return to the hotel for a cocktail at Offa's Bar followed by dinner at The Hereford, or round to The Bookshop who specialists in steak.

In the morning, head over to Hampton Court Castle to tour the interiors and explore the magnificent gardens. Take lunch here at The Orangery, overlooking the lawns, and then call in at Newton Court Cider, where you can taste award-winning artisan cider fresh from the barrel. 

Spend the afternoon touring three of North Herefordshire’s picture-perfect 'Black and White' villages. Set amongst rolling hills, orchards and hopyards, Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland are all charming examples of English half-timbered architecture. 

Continue meandering through the countryside, arriving at gastropub The Stagg at Titley for a delicious dinner under the beams.

Today you’ll head west to explore the captivating Golden Valley. The wild, untamed here countryside is undeniably enchanting. Start with a walk up at Garway Hill to enjoy 360-degree views and the chance to see the wild ponies. Nearby is Garway Church, one of only six churches in England built by the Knight’s Templar. Steeped in atmosphere, it’s a beautifully remote spot for some quiet contemplation.  Journey on through this magical landscape to The Bridge Inn, MichaelChurch Escley, to relax over lunch on the riverbank.

In the afternoon, there's two options. Soak up more Herefordshire history at Longtown Castle, tranquil Dore Abbey and the fantastically carved Kilpeck Church.  Or try your hand at blacksmithing at Oldfield Forge. 

In the evening, drive over to Pensons, a Michelin-starred restaurant in a restored barn which celebrates local ingredients.

On your last day, breakfast at cool coffee shop and restaurant Sensory & Rye before travelling to the Chase family farm. Take a tour of the distillery and discover the secrets of their premium gin and vodka...the best bit, naturally, is the tasting! 

Finish up in the charming market town of Ledbury. Mooch around the fantastic array of independent boutiques before dining at The Feathers, a former coaching inn.
