Hereford
Right next to the motte and bailey castle, and sheltered in an adjacent hollow, the stunningly beautiful church of St Mary and St David, with its rounded apse and domed ceilings, was built in the early part of the 12th century, in the style known as Romanesque. A written guide clearly explains the many unusual features within the church interior, and the external South door has several carvings around its entrance which symbolise the trials and tribulations of the outside world as you pass into this holy place. There is much of interest for even the most sceptical visitor, and its possible links to the Knights Hospitallers add an intriguing rich vein. There is a free audible tour app to download on the church website.
