It is probable that there was a Celtic Christian community on the riverbank in the 6th-century. What is certain is that there was a Saxon church at Peterchurch: the undercroft & walls have traces of Saxon stonework and there is also a Saxon stone altar, complete with five incised crosses. When the Normans arrived they built three stunning arches and left a unique Norman font. Showing typical Norman skills, the building has an interesting perspective.
The 13th-century tower with its ring of six bells has an unusual ringing chamber as it has a door providing access to the church and another door in the outer wall.
The original stone spire was built in 1320. When it fell into disrepair, its replacement was fashioned out of fibreglass!
In St Peter’s churchyard, you will find the grave of Robert Jones VC. From the church porch, the walk to his resting place takes you past the old yew tree which, at a recent inspection, was dated at over 2,000 years old.
In today’s modern world, St Peter’s Church is a striking example of the way in which boundaries between the sacred and the secular are transcended. Its interior has been remodeled and now houses The Hub. When not being used by its congregation, St Peter’s hums with activity: a handful of staff are supported by local volunteers to run a community development project within the building which comprises a café, library, exhibition space, & information point.
