Take a Family Road Trip: Hideous Histories of Herefordshire

Get to know the darker side of Herefordshire with its ruined castles, spooky caves and fearsome folklore. The Hideous Histories of Herefordshire features four family road trips which can be downloaded and enjoyed as self-guided adventures. The trails feature a total of fifteen places across different regions of Herefordshire, with each guide bringing the deadly historic details of the various sites of interest to life. Suggested crafts and games inspire imaginative play and keep kids engaged with each location.

Try Clay Modelling: CUP Ceramics Community

At the heart of CUP Ceramics Community in Hereford is a drive for social, economic, and environmental sustainability. They provide facilities for Herefordshire communities to develop practical skills and gain therapeutic benefits through creating ceramics. During half term they are running a special session where children will design, create and decorate their creations using techniques taught. The £15 fee includes materials, glaze and kiln firing. The session is running on Monday 17 February from 11am - 12.30pm. Book online.

Driving you Crazy? Book a 3 Day Junior Karting School

Herefordshire Raceway is located just outside the village of Weobley and is ideal for the next Lewis Hamilton or the complete beginner. Children aged 8 to 16 can learn how to improve their lap time, how to overtake and defend position over three mornings (19 to 21 February). 

Arrive at 9:30am, each session lasts for 2 hours, where children are taught the basics of karting followed by continuous assessment to improve their skills. The final day will be a race event with the winners taking home a trophy.  The courses will be limited to 14 children so each child can have full attention and is priced from £120 per person.

Experience a Guided Animal Safari on an Organic Farm

Drovers Rest is a sixteenth century Organic Farm located near the book town of Hay-on-Wye. Tucked away in the foothills of the Black Mountains, the farm is surrounded by 200 acres of fields. As well as offering gorgeous accommodation, Drovers Rest is open to those wanting to visit on a day trip. Farm visits here are fun and educational and there is plenty of space for little kids to run wild and free climbing trees and den building in February half term. You can follow the Wildlife Mini Beast Nature Hunt, or let them blow off some steam in the Wild Play Areas. 

The Guided Animal Safari costs £12.50 per person (under 2s go free). On the tour you’ll learn about the history of the farm, feed and interact with the animals in their pens and find out about rewilding and wildflower restoration. There’s also Camp Fire experiences offered complete with Smores kits. Pre-booking essential.

Follow Puss in Boots' Quest

The Hereford Amateur Pantomime Society presents Puss in Boots at the Courtyard Theatre in Hereford during half term week. When Jack inherits nothing but a cat, he’s left feeling disheartened, while his brothers lay claim to the mill and its wealth. With the help of some magical boots, this ordinary feline transforms into the cunning Puss in Boots and embarks on an epic quest to change Jack’s fate. Together, they must battle various obstacles and villains to win Princess Esmeralda’s hand and impress the King and Queen as the Marquis of Carabas. Tickets cost from £12 - £18, runs from 19 to 22 February.

Dive into Action & Adventure

Oaker Wood is perfect for children over seven years who want to experience the thrills and freedom of the forest, all 175 acres of it! If the grown-ups fancy a hike and the kids aren’t keen, then why not book them on to a half term holiday club day (19 or 20 February) where each day is different and children participate in a range of different activities.

In groups of 10-12 they experience Low Ropes, the Gladiator Climbing Challenge, pistol shooting, a Monkey Climb and games such as Capture the Flag and Woodland Krypton. These holiday club sessions cost £25 per child and run from 9am-3pm. 

There is also a Teen Adventure Day on 21 February for kids aged 11-16 which includes High Ropes and Paintballing. A half day session is £20 and a full day session is £40.

Climb New Heights

Green Spider is Hereford’s biggest indoor roped and bouldering centre. Join the Green Spider crew for one of their fun-packed climbing adventure half term days. As well as climbing on a variety of walls, your children will also take part in a wide range of fun climbing and non-climbing based activities. All instruction and equipment is provided and no previous climbing experience is needed. It is priced from £48pp for the full day experience (10am – 4pm). Available for children aged 7 to 17 years.

Gruffalo trail

Hunt for the Gruffalo

Queenswood Country Park, just nine miles from the cathedral city of Hereford, is home to an arboretum (a 47-acre tree collection with over 1,200 rare and exotic trees from all over the world) and 123 acres of semi-natural ancient woodland which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Local Nature Reserve (LNR). 

Kids visiting Queenswood love the Gruffalo Trail which features five larger than life sculptures of characters from the iconic Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books. Spot the Mouse, Fox, Snake, Owl and of the course the Gruffalo. The trail is aimed at those aged 2 to 6 but is fun for all the family and is suitable for pushchairs and buggies. Free of charge, except for parking.

Meet Mini Animals

Pygmy goats, miniature horses, miniature donkeys, alpacas, rabbits, guinea pigs and over 30 species of owl are just of the some of the wonderful wildlife you can visit at The Small Breeds Farm Park in Kington, Herefordshire. There are lots of open spaces and a small café for food and drink.

Open daily throughout half term from 10.30am to 4pm. Entry is £12.50 for adults, £8 for children with under twos going free. No need to pre-book.

Release your Inner Viking

Home to an exhilarating range of Viking-inspired group activities, The Viking Games is located overlooking the Black Mountains and is the place to channel Nordic gamesmanship outdoors with the family. Drovers Rest is a sixteenth century Organic Farm near the book town of Hay-on-Wye in Herefordshire. Tucked away in the foothills of the Black Mountains, the farm offers wild campfire experiences, a farm trail, animal safaris and lots of wild play areas making it perfect for a half term escape. Two-bedroom cottages cost from £300 for a two night stay week commencing 17 February 2025. 

The Feathers Hotel in Ledbury has availability during half term. A one-night stay (based on two sharing) costs from £134 per room. In the heart of Ledbury this traditional coaching inn has lovely rooms and a fantastic restaurant. 

A suite sleeping three at The Riverside at Aymestrey near the Herefordshire market town of Leominster costs from £200 during February half term including breakfast. Renowned for its incredible food, this gorgeous rural bolthole is brilliantly located for exploring Herefordshire’s hidden
gems. 

The Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford has availability over February half term. The Apartment, sleeping four, is perfect for families, and costs from £189 per night. Located in the heart of the city and one of the UK’s oldest coaching inns, the hotel offers 83 rooms, a stunning 1920s panelleddining room serving delicious local seasonal produce.

The White Heron Estate in the north of Herefordshire offers a number of different self-catering cottages set in over 700 acres of historic farmland. A seven-night stay at Field Cottage over February half term half costs from £745 (based on four sharing). Short break prices are available by contacting White Heron directly. Join an estate wintery walking tour for an additional £25pp. The walking tour includes a visit to the family’s artisan Cassiserie where guests will see their award-winning British Cassis being made and get a behind the scenes insight into life on the Hilditch family farm strolling through their vineyards and orchards. 

The Hope & Anchor Restaurant and Rooms in Ross-on-Wye has rooms from £110 including breakfast based on two sharing. They even have pet friendly rooms for guests wanting to bring their dog. The Hope & Anchor is a beautiful riverside pub, restaurant & inn in the heart of Ross-On-Wye. The Pub serves wholesome breakfasts and a delicious homemade pub menu for lunch and dinner.
