Adrenaline Weekend with Teens
Outdoor adventures for all the family. Speed through woods on quad bikes, climb trees, bike for miles and paddle the Wye. Refuel at country pubs and award-winning burger joints.
Banish teenage boredom with this action-packed family itinerary. Laughter is guaranteed as you try each new activity. There is little time for phones, although it’ll be hard to resist a snap of the stunning scenery or a memorable moment (maybe mum releasing her inner speed demon on the quad trek?).
Day 1
Start as you mean to go on with an adventure day at Oaker Wood Leisure, specialists in adrenaline-fuelled family fun. After an initial training, you’ll be speeding around the 175-acre woodland at the helm of a quad bike! It’s a thrilling off-road experience and the mixed terrain will challenge your skills.
In the afternoon, it’s time to test your collective nerve. You’ll be seeing the woods from rather a different perspective as you take to the high ropes. Pick and mix from a selection of treetop activities. Will you dare to whizz down the Zip Wire, scale a 20ft tree on the Monkey Climb, master the Gladiator Challenge or jump the Leap of Faith?
After all that exertion, parents can relax over a ‘no codswallop’ cider bought down the road, direct from the maker, at Newton Court Farm.
Day 2
Gear up to explore Herefordshire on bike today. First up, grab your caffeine fix in Kington. This tiny market town lies in the Welsh Marches where the walking is famous. But it makes for a fantastic trip on two wheels too. The Tourism Information Centre can provide suggestions, including a route passing over the border into Wales and returning via the dramatic Hergest Ridge. You’ll be out of breath but still wowed by the views, we promise! Or cruise 28 miles around the black and white villages, taking a well-earned break at the homely tea rooms - we’re yet to meet a teen who can resist a good cake.
Keen to cram in more cycling? Book a two or three day itinerary with a specialist provider, such as Wheely Wonderful which offers bike hire, accommodation and luggage transfer.
Cool off in the afternoon with a wild swim. Park by the bridge in Pembridge and find the small but much-loved beach area on the River Arrow. Or wind down with a visit to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre outside Kington. Their rare and miniature creatures are sure to clock up the instagram likes!
Afterwards, travel into Hereford to sample the city’s contemporary food scene. Choose from juicy steaks at The Bookshop, Italian flavours at Cotto, British classics at The Den or fine burgers at The Beefy Boys and The Burger Shop.
Day 3
Eat a hearty breakfast - the menu at Sensory & Rye is always tempting - as you will be canoeing from Hereford to Hoarwithy. This 18-mile stretch of the River Wye is a full day’s paddle, winding from the Cathedral city, through small villages and beautiful countryside. There’s even a few rapids to navigate around Carey’s Island. Keep an eye out for shy deer and brilliant birdlife, from herons to kingfishers. Those of a competitive nature will love a family tournament, who will win the award for fastest paddler?
Finish the day at The New Harp Inn over a well-earned dinner, before being transported back to Hereford. If you got a taste for it, come back and see us for a multi-day canoe trip with camping along the way.
