Description

Walford Court was built as a courthouse approximately 500 years ago. Today it stands amongst 20 acres of stream bordered gardens, orchard and fields, within which is situated a motte and bailey registered as an ancient monument, upon which once stood Walford Castle..

The scenic setting is outstandingly beautiful and peaceful and located within one of the three most tranquil spots in the country, according to the Council for the Protection of Rural England. The area is quintessentially English with living villages, great walking and cycling and plenty of wildlife spotting! Ludlow with its slow food award and fabulous restaurants are a 10 minute drive away. This is slow country living at its best!

Walford Court itself is grade 2 listed and timber framed. It holds a lot of secrets – a 17th century annexe has a plaster frieze which covers half of one wall above oak panelling, which is thought to commemorate the return of the newly weds, Prince Arthur and Catherine of Aragon, to Ludlow Castle in the early 1500′s. Perhaps they visited Walford Court before Prince Arthur’s death and her subsequent marriage to Arthur’s brother, the infamous Henry VIII !

Romantic breaks are our speciality in either of our two generous luxury Suites or our large double room. Our Aragon Suite is a Tudor delight with beams and leaded windows and comprises a sitting room, with en-suite cloakroom, and a large bedroom with an oak carved panelled four poster bed, and a roll top bath situated in the bedroom under a sunny oak framed leaded window just for that touch of decadence! Our Courthouse Suite is located over the old Courtroom, and is the perfect choice for longer stays with its large sunny bedroom and king sized bed, up 2 steps from the bedroom and you’ll find the most delightful sitting room with views over the garden. This Suite has a total of 6 leaded windows overlooking 3 aspects of the gardens and fields. The en-suite white tiled bathroom is off the sitting room through the old latched door, and has the trademark Walford Court large roll top bath – fit for two. There is a comfy armchair and couch, lots of books, and a fridge to keep your wine and snacks cold! Alternatively you could try Prince Arthur’s room – also full of character, it contains a rustic king sized bed and sitting area, the sizeable en-suite bathroom has original oak flooring, and again a roll top bath for that sumptuous soak! All our rooms have tea trays with a daily supply of home baked muffins. There are TVs and DVDs, games, cards, puzzles and of course candles for that romantic touch!

Evening meals are served in our guest lounge with inglenook fireplace and beautiful oak leaded windows, which provide views out to the pretty garden and ancient yew tree – you bring the wine, we provide the candles and real log fires! On fine sunny days, we are happy to serve our AGA cooked breakfasts or evening meals in the garden amidst the birdsong. All our meals are home cooked using organic home grown or local produce, with eggs from our pampered ‘girls’ in the orchard!

Special deals are always available – please call or email for details. A weekend at Walford Court makes a wonderful gift – we can supply you with a tailor-made gift voucher.
