Culture

Herefordshire’s stunning natural scenery and its unhurried pace have inspired artists, crafts people and musicians to settle and create in this county. As a result, visitors have a wealth of choice for galleries, exhibitions, speciality retailers, festivals and events.

The Courtyard Gallery in Hereford plays host to artists from home and abroad including the nationally famous Hereford Photography Festival. h.Art is Herefordshire’s Open Studios annual event, giving exclusive access to artists’ studios, workshops and special exhibitions. This year there are 103 fantastic venues spread across the whole county and borders. It is the perfect opportunity to meet the makers in relaxed surroundings, learn about their techniques and inspiration and perhaps buy an original artwork.

In November, the Courtyard houses the Hereford Contemporary Crafts Fair showcasing contemporary crafts from Herefordshire and the West Midlands. There you will find craftspeople selling work from a huge variety of craft mediums and styles with the emphasis on excellence. Work ranges from non-traditional crafts to the more traditional craft methods using contemporary design.

In the city is the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, which is a good place to start to come to grips with the cultural richness of this county and in each of the market towns, there is a small museum with more specialist resources.
